During the past Autumn of 2025, a group of boys ages 5 to 10 adventured into the woods every Friday, looking for an adventure. We didn’t know where the path would take us. Was it a spot to build a fort? Was it a log full of ants we needed to investigate? Was it to meet the sleeping rock giant? It soon became evident that this imaginative journey was not only a grand adventure but also a pathway to something more important, a pathway to becoming friends.
While immersed in nature, these boys were able to discover themselves and discover camaraderie with their fellow adventure mates. The dynamic of the group shaped the rules of the games, and everyone was able to contribute to the game to the best of their ability. Adventures were had. Discoveries were made. Boundaries and negotiations were constantly being created. Fun was had. Imaginative cooperative play led to them becoming friends.
It was a joy to be a part of this journey. To witness the individual growth and how they came together as a group was a gift. It was not an easy path, but one that led to a good place.
